The Redragon M601 Centrophorus Gaming Mouse
Pros – Economical, Braided cable, Adjustable weights, Aesthetically beautiful
Cons – Quality doesn’t feel premium, Always-on LED lights
Recently my Logitech G400s stopped working, and I thought of getting a replacement mouse. Researching a bit online, I found the Redragon M601 Centrophorus, which for the price looked to be a sweet deal.
It’s a sturdy looking optical mouse exuding a confident first impression. It is moulded in red and black plastic and has a fairly long 6 ft braided cable. The braided cable is a great touch as it is unheard of in a mouse of this budget. The mouse has six buttons, and has 8 weight pieces you can change depending on the kind of weight you prefer for your mouse. Two additional buttons on the left hand side of the mouse are also there which can be configured for games and Windows, as well as another dedicated button to control the DPI (Dots Per Inch) of the mouse. The scroll wheel also feels to be of high quality, and you can feel each scroll individually.
It has a 2000 DPI optical sensor, which for the budget is adequate, and if you have a single 1080p monitor, it should suffice as the movement of the mouse feels just right at 2000 DPI. I run dual 1080p monitors and I could have used a higher rated sensor, but I’m just nitpicking. Moving the mouse around with a mouse with higher DPI setting gives you a greater level of sensitivity, and adds to the precision in both games and in software like photoshop.
One of the most surprising features of this mouse is the availability of adjustable weights. I was blown away at the thought of a sub 1k mouse having them at all. I never had to remove any of the weights while gaming as I love heavier mice, as it helps my palm-grip control in games.
There was no driver supplied with the mouse, but they can be downloaded from Redragon’s website. I have to say that installing them is certainly optional. This is because the mouse runs fine right after plugging the USB in your computer, well at least on Windows 10 which detected it easily. The driver, if you choose to download it is quite basic, and has few options you can tweak. You shouldn’t expect the software to be close to Razer’s or Logitech’s.
I have been using this mouse for around three weeks at the point of writing this review, and I have to say that this mouse has certainly impressed me. I have played a lot of League of Legends, Hearthstone, Battlefield 4 and Team Fortress 2 using this mouse, and it hasn’t let me down. I also felt that the mouse was a bit small for my large hands, but you have average sized hands you need not worry at all.
The sensor is decent and works well for League of Legends and Hearthstone, but I did miss my Logitech G400s while playing Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield 4. The additional buttons found on the left side of the mouse were used by me in all the games except Hearthstone, which as it’s a slow turn-based card game, didn’t require them. I should also mention that this is strictly a mouse for right-handed gamers, and southpaw gamers should look elsewhere.
Over extended gaming sessions, the G601 hasn’t disappointed me at all. It doesn’t feel cheap while gaming, and you won’t miss your expensive mouse at all if this is a replacement. The aim in shooters seemed to be accurate and responsive, but I missed my grip of old G400S which sticked to my palm at all times. The mouse would have been better if it had a rubber grip like the Logitech G400S, as the patchy plastic build isn’t the easiest to grip for hours.
What I didn’t like were few and far between, but I disliked the always-on LED lights which are found on this mouse. At night, especially when you want to sleep, the lights can be annoying and there is no way to turn them off. Another small con is that the mouse is fully made of plastic, and therefore doesn’t feel too premium while it is gripped by you, but at this price range you shouldn’t really complain.
My conclusion would be that this is a great bang-for-your-buck mouse. Redragon is a budget option for gamers who want value for money, without compromising on the quality too much.
If I had to rate this product, I would give it a decent 7 out of 10. For the price, it is certainly one of the best mice you can purchase. I bought the M601 from Amazon India for Rs 694 (US$10.2) in a lightning deal.
Here are a few pictures that I clicked of the mouse.
