Good designer, bad designer, which one are you?
It is no secret that when you are a designer, you are going to want to be a good designer. But how exactly do you do this? Well, you may be surprised to learn that there are quite a few things that will take you from a bad designer, to a really good one and they are much easier to do than you may realise.
Have some user empathy
When you are designer it is all too easy to become completely absorbed in your own approaches, thoughts and solutions that go with a problem. However, a good designer is going to be someone who is able to look at the problems of a user with empathy and think about how your design will have an impact on them?
Ask questions to learn more
A good designer is going to want to make sure that they ask as many question as possible about their design. They are going to want to have an understanding about what is needed as well as the approaches that they can take to get there. A bad designer is simply going to get to work, they are not going to want to learn anything else, even if it could be of help to the design in the end.
Keep thinking about solutions even when one has been found
In order to create, the designer is going to need to think of a solution to a problem. A bad designer is going to think of one solution and decide that this is enough! However, a good designer is going to want to think of a variety of solutions and then pick which one is going to be the perfect one (or perhaps combine a number of solutions to get to the right one).
Think about the best design rather than on the latest tools and trends
It can be hard to ignore some of the latest techniques, trends, and tools out there. Especially when it comes to design. However, one of the worst things that you can do is to focus solely on using all those amazing new techniques to come to a solution, when they need something a little more old-fashioned. A good designer knows that there are going to be a variety of tools that they are going to need to use to get exactly where they need to be.
Always ask for feedback
One of the key parts of being a good designer is that you look for and listen to feedback from the clients that you have worked with. A bad designer will ignore anything that the client has to say, thinking that the work is done so it doesn’t matter. A good designer will take what is said and work on the areas that could be improved.
As you can see, there are plenty of things to think about if you want to be the very best designer possible. So, why not try them out for yourself and see if you can take your design skills from okay, to amazing?
