Beyerdynamic is well known German Audio Products manufacturer popular among audiophiles, they have been making audio products since 1924, in fact they made the first ever headphone in the late 1930s. This should give you an idea about their legacy, coming on to the DT series, it is especially popular among the community due to its unique sound signature, ruggedness and comfort. Today we are going to take a look at the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80Ohms Edition.

The tech Specs are as follows-

  • Transmission type : Wired
  • Headphone design (operating principle) : Closed
  • Headphone impedance : 80 ohms
  • Headphone frequency response : 5 – 35.000 Hz
  • Nominal sound pressure level : 96 dB

Design and Build:

The build quality of these is just great no two ways about it, the headband is made out of quality metal and the ear cups are made of durable hard plastic, the cables are also pretty thick and sturdy. It also comes equipped with velour pads instead of pleather or leather, and velour pads have a longer lifespan compared to the other options and are washable too. Now another thing to add here is that every part on the DT 770s is replaceable so getting them fixed shouldn’t be an issue in case they go bad, also the headband is completely removable and houses the external cable connecting the left year cup to the right, the external cable is by design as keeping them out helps in troubleshooting or while replacement. DT 770s also have bass ports on each cup for better bass response and to let the driver breathe. Lastly the DT 770s are closed back headphones, meaning they will block outside noise as well as not allow sound to leak out of the headphones, so these will work well in a noisy environment.

Experience

Comfort: This is one area the DT lineup from Beyerdynamic really excels, the velour pads are really soft and cushiony, and cover your ear completely, these can be worn for hours without feeling any discomfort as they are really light, but the clamping force initially is a little high, but you can just extend the headband, or bend it very slightly to alleviate the issue. So overall a very comfy experience.

Sound Quality: Finally coming to the main course, the sound on these isn’t exactly neutral, so now that this fact’s out of the way, i would like to say these have a very pleasing sound signature which is more suited to music listening than monitoring, but for monitoring something like the DT 250 would be better or the DT 880 as they have a more neutral sound signature. Coming back to DT 770s, these have slightly V shaped frequency response, meaning the bass and the treble are slightly accentuated, and the mid is a little bit laid back, this isn’t necessarily an issue as these cans respond to equalizing quite well and a good amp certainly helps things too, this would only be an issue to people who listen to classical music or vocal centric music, so classical fans, stay away.

Instrument separation is pretty good on these and gets a bit better after burn in, Initially the Bass is a little over the top but still controlled, give them some time to get burned in and the bass gets tighter and the highs become more prominent. The bass really goes deep/low, and isn’t too boomy, rather its very controlled and tight, it’s very very enjoyable, although don’t mistake them for DJ headphones as these are not, the bass never overpowers other frequencies, it knows its boundaries. The treble on these is also quite lively and detailed, not as much as say the DT 990 but still quite sparkly and is slightly rolled off, sufficiently enough to avoid too much sibilance. Soundstage is another attribute these are quite good with, these have pretty wide/big soundstage despite being closed back, I could pin point enemies while playing multiplayer games like Battlefield and Planetside 2. The environmental sound effects in Skyrim were also quite pleasing, just don’t forget to switch the sound mode to headphones in the game settings instead of 5.1 or stereo. So these are pretty good for gaming too, and a lot better than those “gaming” headsets in general minus the mic.

Now let me list out genres I listen to and how they fare with those, I usually listen to all kinds of Electronic music and Rock and its sub genres and Metal(Mostly Folk, Power and Melodic) along with some Jpop, In all of these, DT 770s haven’t disappointed me, but then again none of these genres are vocal heavy so that’s there. Basically anyone looking at buying a headphone for listening to the above mentioned genres can blindly buy the DT 770s, being able to game as well on these is an added bonus.

Here is a frequency response graph for the DT 770s :

As is evident from this graph, we can see the emphasis on the lower and higher frequencies but as I said the mids aren’t really too recessed and with a little bit of tweaking are quite manageable, but ofc they still won’t be as profound as in the Sennheiser HD 598s !

Conclusion :

I would give it a 10 on 10 but that’s just my personal opinion as sound is a very subjective matter, but for the price they are pretty awesome and having 80 ohms impedance, aren’t as hard to drive either at least through the PC. On mobiles these do leave a little more to be desired, so I would suggest getting an amp if you want to get the most out of these. All in all, if you are like me who wants a fun headphone which can give you all the bells and whistles while still being highly detailed then look no further, these are for you.

Note : All the tests were done using the following equipment Onboard ALC 898 Codec and FiiO E11K Amp.
