The overclocking party for low cost Skylake processors is over folks! Intel on an recent industry interaction stated that they will be shutting down the overclocking on low end Skylake processors through an Microcode update. Intel blocking overclocking on non-K chip was speculated this month itself which is somewhat found to be true right now although the update hasn’t been issued yet.
Talking with PCGAMER earlier this week Intel stated ,”Intel regularly issues updates for our processors which our partners voluntarily incorporate into their BIOS”. They also stated that “The latest update provided to partners includes, among other things, code that aligns with the position that we do not recommend overclocking processors that have not been designed to do so. Additionally, Intel does not warranty the operation of the processor beyond its specifications.”
By the end of 2015, overclockers were able to overclock the non-K CPU’s by increasing the base clock of the chip. But Intel has other of CPU’s which support overclocking and is more expensive than their other non-K counterparts. So overclocking non-K CPU was not good for the health of the company as it seemed to be a violation of terms and conditions.
So yeah, overclocking a non-K processor now is not OK. Intel already made it clear by disabling overclocking the B150 and H170 motherboards previously. This move isn’t a shocker as Intel did the same recent years back by blocking overclocking done by the B-series and the H-series motherboards. This made people to buy the higher end Z-series motherboard which was designed to support overclocking officially. The only way to keep using your overclocked non-K chip is by not updating the BIOS ever.
