While NVIDIA continues to dominate the discrete graphics market, AMD has managed to claw back a little and by little I mean 0.8 % little.

AMD managed to steal 0.8 per cent of the market from NVIDIA and now sits with 18.8 % market share which is still a far cry away from the 28.4 % AMD held last year.

The above chart is not however limited to the gaming market, and instead accounts for all add-in-board’s or AIBs.

For AIBs as a whole, the market has increase almost 30 per cent “quarter-to-quarter”. JPR also provides figures for the desktop market, which saw a modest boost of 7.6 per cent.

Shipments have actually fallen universally compared to last year:

On a year-to-year basis, we found that total AIB shipments for the quarter fell -3.9%, which is less than desktop PCs, which fell -8.9%.

AMD still has a lot of work ahead of it, they recently formed Radeon Technologies Group promising improvements on the driver side with Radeon Crimson and also launched the $ 250 R9 380X . The AMD Radeon R9 FURY X, R9 FURY and R9 NANO are also the first GPUs to feature High Bandwidth Memory or “HBM”.

It will be interesting to see how these two giants fare with DirectX12 titles right around the corner.
